Bridges, Lucas: The Uttermost Part of the Earth (out of print, available from www.abebooks.com). Quite the most riveting and vivid account of pioneer life, beautifully told by the missionary's son who was adopted by the indigenous Selk'nam of Tierra del Fuego, and protected them, while elsewhere on the island they were under attack. Full of adventure and startling insights into the culture of this dying race.
Burns, Jimmy: The Hand of God, Bloomsbury, and The Land that Lost its Heroes, (out of print). Both great books for an insight into the country: the first relates the rise to fame and downfall of Maradonna, while the second charts the period before the Falklands/ Malvinas war, and its aftermath, by the British correspondent for the Financial Times.
Chatwin, Bruce: In Patagonia, (Vintage/ Penguin). The famous novel which popularized Patagonia and acted as a magnet to the place for many travellers, is actually rather dismissive, and you're likely to have far more interesting encounters yourself. Read before you travel rather than bring it with you.
Chatworth Musters, George: At Home with the Patagonians, (out of print). A fascinating account of Usters' journey riding with the indigenous Aonik'enk across Patagonia, giving insights into the Tehuelche culture.
Guevara, Che: The Motorcycle Diaries (Verso, UK). The young Che's romp through Patagonia on a clapped out motorbike at 23 is great fun, and gives a flavour of the land which is recognisable in places, but more interesting for an insight into the developing mind of the revolutionary.
Kuper, Simon: Football Against the Enemy, Orion/Trafalgar Square. In this collection of essays on football over the world, the chapter in the 1978 world cup in Argentina is particularly entertaining and telling.
Luna, Felix: Buenos Aires y el Interior del Pais. Fictionalized history from reliable Argentine historian, going some way to explain why Buenos Aires is really another country within Argentina.
McEwan, Colin: Patagonia: Natural History, Prehistory and Ethnography at the Uttermost Part of the Earth, (British Museum press). The indigenous cultures of Patagonia and their destruction in the early 20th century. Illustrated, well-written essays.
Rock, David: Argentina 1516-1987, (out of print). A huge tome which fully relates Argentina's history, addressing its mysterious failure to thrive through a careful analysis of its murky politics.
Sarmiento, Domingo: Facundo: Civilisation and Barbarism, (Penguin). The classic allegorical essay which attacks the domination of violent caudillos.
Shipton, Eric: Tierra del Fuego: The Fatal Lodestone, (out of print). Worth hunting down, this is a wonderful account of the early exploration of the southernmost part of the country.
